I think the best and worst scout event yet was going to and sleeping on the
USS Cobia. Getting to tour the boat and learn about submarines was really cool. The boys got to act out torpedo launching procedures and how to dive the sub. Late night there was a "nook and cranny" tour where we were able to see the battery room and the upper control room. All very awesome and makes me wonder how much other awesome stuff like this is right in Wisconsin that I don't know about. They do family overnights if you want to go. I can't tell you much about the museum because we had to leave right away in the morning, so the boys could go to basketball.
The only problem with this trip is the lateness of it and the sleeping. The tour started around 8:00 p.m. and lasted until almost midnight. Then some of the parents and kids wouldn't shut up and go to sleep, even with Cole, Henry and a couple of their friends shushing them and telling people to be quiet. We probably got to sleep around 12:30 a.m.
The size of the bunks and comfort level of sleeping was another problem. If I slept three hours total I would be surprised. It makes you respect the people that served on submarines though. 80 men for two months on a sub that is anywhere from 90 to 120 degrees, noisy, smokey, and people showering maybe every couple weeks. Crazy to even try to imagine.
